Tiger Spikers bow down to UP
"Umayaw nang fifth set. 'Yung key player (Jose), hindi na nakabalik sa rhythm niya.”
The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers suffered a heart-breaking loss against the University of the Philippines Maroon Spikers, 23-25, 25-20, 25-20, 16-25, 8-15, in the UAAP Season 79 men’s volleyball tournament, Sunday, at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
Leading 2-1, UP capitalized on the absence of Tiger Spiker Jerico Jose in the last two sets, extending the match into the crucial fifth set, 25-16.
The España-based spikers were behind by only two points in the fifth set, 6-8, until UP took advantage of UST’s error capped by a Mark Millete hit to seal the game, 15-8.
UST head coach Odjie Mamon pointed out the team’s lack of focus and failure to execute their game plan, “Focus, umayaw nang fifth set. ‘Yung key player (Jose), hindi na nakabalik sa rhythm niya.”
Jose was off to a hot start in the first set but the Tiger Spikers were unable to stop the one-two punch of Wendell Miguel and Alfred Valbuena, 25-23.
UST bounced back in the second and third set behind Wewe Medina and Arnold Bautista’s offensive firepower, 25-20, 25-20.
Sophomore Medina paced Tigers with 16 points while Valbuena and Miguel scored 22 and 21 points, respectively.
UST will try to recover as they face the Adamson University on Saturday, Feb. 25, at the same venue.
