Tiger Spikers barge into final four despite loss to FEU
The España-based spikers ended the elimination round with 6-8 win-loss card that suited them in fourth place
The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers succumbed to the Far Eastern University Tamaraws in straight sets, 25-23, 25-18, 25-18, Saturday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
The España-based spikers ended the elimination round with 6-8 win-loss card that suited them in fourth place.
Jerico Jose once again led the Tiger Spikers with seven points while TJ Caradon and Isaiah Icalina added six points apiece.
UST unleashed a 5-0 rally late in the first set to take the lead at 20-19. The Tamaraws would not back down as they sparked a 5-1 run of their own, to take an early set point advantage, 24-21.
Back to back errors by FEU gave UST a chance to extend the set, 23-24, but a JP Bugaoan block to UST’s Manuel Medina closed the set, 25-23.
“Non-bearing ‘yung game pero dapat may matutunan sila [‘yung mga players ko],” UST head coach Odjie Mamon said. “Kailangan lang din i-reaffirm ‘yung commitment nila at kulang din sila sa focus.”
Holding a slim three-point lead in the third and deciding frame, 17-14, Tamaraws uncorked a 5-1 blitz capped by Greg Dolor’s huge block against Medina’s attack. Tiger Spiker Timothy Tajanlangit surrendered the match with an untimely service error, 25-18.
FEU kept their momentum going as they easily scored 10 points off UST’s unforced errors en route to 25-18 second set win.
Tiger Spikers last saw themselves in the Final Four in Season 77.
UST will start their postseason campaign as they face the third-seeded FEU once more on Apr. 19, Wednesday, at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.
