Golden Tigresses outmuscle UP
With the win, UST also avenged its first-round loss against the Lady Maroons
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses claimed at least a shot for final four playoffs at the expense of the University of the Philippine Lady Maroons, 25-20, 25-21, 25-16, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s volleyball tournament, Sunday, at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.
UST dominated in the scoring department as they tallied 30 attacks, 10 blocks and nine service aces to improve their standing at 8-5 win-loss record.
The Golden Tigresses sparked a 19-5 run in the third set led by Laure’s pivotal services and Rondina’s vicious attacks, 20-7. Laure would then end the game with a down the line hit, 25-16.
Season 77 best blocker Ria Meneses orchestrated UST’s block party tallying eight blocks for a 10-point performance. UST’s one-two punch EJ Laure and Cherry Rondina contributed for 29 points while UP’s Diane Carlos scored eight points.
“Nakaka-boost ng confidence para sa morale ng team kasi UP yan eh,” Meneses said.
Down 11-13, UST took advantage of UP’s unforced errors in the crucial stretch to get a comfortable four-point lead, 18-14, and never looked back en route to 25-21 second set win.
The España based squad will try to end the second round eliminations with a win against the National University Lady Bulldogs to stamp their Final 4 ticket on Saturday, Apr. 8, at the Smart Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City.
