Golden Booters suffer second defeat vs Ateneo
“Worst second half ever,” UST head coach Marjo Allado said.
The University of Santo Tomas Golden Booters faltered against last season’s finalist Ateneo de Manila University Blue Booters, 1-5, in UAAP Season 79 men’s football tournament, Sunday, at Rizal Memorial Football Pitch in Malate, Manila.
In the 60th minute, Ateneo’s Rupert Baña found the back of the net against the pesky defense of UST Goalkeeper Zaldy Abraham, 3-1.
Substitute Paolo Alilam shut the door on UST after scoring in the 81st minute, before sealing the deal in the injury time to get their third straight win, 5-1.
“Hindi nasunod namin yung gusto naming gawin. Parang yung players na-outmuscle ni Ateneo,” head coach Marjo Allado said. “Worst second half ever.”
Reigning Best Striker Javier Gayoso scored the first goal in the 10th minute but UST’s AJ Passion pulled off an equalizer after a minute, 1-1.
In the 37th minute, Gayoso’s corner kick was converted by rookie Ryan Haosen to build a 2-1 cushion coming into the second half.
The España-based booters will try to get their first win against the University of the East on Thursday, Feb. 16, at the Moro Lorenzo Field in Quezon City.
