The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers and Lady Spikers swept the elimination and forged their way into the finals in the UAAP Season 79 Beach Volleyball Tournament, Friday, at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
After missing the final four last season, the duo of Cherry Rondina and Jem Gutierrez cruised past the FEU Tamaraw, 21-14, 21-15, to gain their seventh win in as many tries.
In the first set, the tandem of Bernadette Pons and Kyla Atienza cut UST’s lead to one, 7-8, until the attacking barrage of Rondina took place, 18-10. Rondina showed her prowess to gain the advantage, 21-14.
Rondina and Guiterrez never looked back in the second set, easily handing FEU’s their second loss, 21-15.
“Hindi namin ganun yung kalalabasan,” UST rookie head coach Paul John Doloiras said. “Yung FEU kasi pangalawa [sa standing], so akala namin balikatan lang din.”
After three bridesmaid finishes, the Tiger Spikers’ Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto proved their supremacy against the Far Eastern University, 21-12, 21-9, to book their return trip to the finals for the fourth consecutive times.
Tiger Spikers and Lady Spikers didn’t dropped any single set against their counterparts in seven outings.
The UST beach volleyball teams will have a one day break before marching into the best-of-three finals on Sunday, Oct. 9, at the same venue.
