THE University of Santo Tomas Golden Shuttlers nailed a hardly-earned victories against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws
THE University of Santo Tomas Golden Shuttlers nailed a hardly-earned victories against the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 3-2, in the UAAP Season 79 Badminton Tournament, Wednesday, at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall in Manila.
After dropping the first two matches in the singles division, Male Shuttlers finished strong to cap off the succeeding games on a high note.
UST’s Paul John Pantig-John Edgar Reyes tandem started their winning momentum as they outmuscled FEU’s Josh Maquelabit and Jade Sarmiento, 21-8, 21-10. Tiger duo Jan Mark Sotea and Kristian Barrios kept the momentum going and dispatched their Tamaraw counterparts, 21-13, 21-13.
Cris Sanchez provided the finishing touches for UST to deliver their much needed win against Justin Tercias, 21-12, 22-20.
In women’s play, Female Shuttlers had a roller coaster game as they split matches in the singles and doubles category against the Lady Tamaraws.
Tied at 2-2, team captain Steffi Denise Aquino sealed the deal for UST against FEU’s Maridel Rivera.
Down by one midway in the first set, 13-14, Aquino varied her attacking game that forced Rivera to commit back-to-back marginal errors that led to 8-1 salvo, 21-15.
In the second set, Aquino overcame a slow start, 6-13, and countered a 15-5 run, to wipe out the hopes of the Lady Tamaraws, 21-18.
UST’s Airish Ann Macalinao and the Maria Kristine Gaspar-Elizabeth Ann Pimentel tandem dismantled their opponents in commanding straight set finishes.
With the win, the España-based shuttlers now hold 3-3 win-loss card and kept their final four hopes alive.
“Nagdeliver naman silang lahat,” UST assistant head coach Ricky Bartolome said. “Tough game siya actually, malakas yung singles nila [FEU], pero nakuha naman namin ‘yung doubles.”
The UST Golden Shuttlers will next face the Ateneo de Manila University Eagles on Saturday, Oct. 1, at the same venue.
