The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers bucked a slow start to barge into the winning column, edging the University of the East Red Warriors, 88-87, in the UAAP Season 79 Men’s Basketball Tournament, Saturday, at the Smart Arenata Coliseum in Quezon City.
Renzo Subido shot a career high 26 points while Jon Sheriff and Marvin Lee added another 15 and 14 points respectively.
“Alam kong puputok ‘yun, nakita ko sa Cebu, nakita ko sa Taiwan. ‘Yung tamang time lang talaga ni Renzo,” UST head coach Boy Sablan said.
“Alam kong may mangyayari sa kanya this year, not like nung past years walang nangyari sa kanya,” he added.
UST enjoyed a nine-point lead in the fourth period but found themselves at the receiving end of UE’s 8-0 run after a game interruption, 86-85, with less than a minute to play.
Lee had a chance to stop the scoring drought but sank only one of his charities with 36 seconds left in game time.
With 17 seconds left, UE’s Bonbon Batillier, had a chance to retake the lead but missed his trey, but a costly turnover gave the ball back to UE.
Reggie Basibas then drew a foul and sank a charity to seal the win for UST 88-87.
“Ang laking bagay, ‘yung 3:39 na naputol, nasa run kami eh, down by four tapos biglang nine ‘yun, nawala eh,” Sablan said.
“Biglang nawala ‘yung momentum namin. Lumamig lahat, na-shootan kami nang na-shootan,” he added.
But despite their late-game struggle, coach Sablan was still happy with the game’s turnout.
“God is good kahit na nagkaroon ng problema sa huli, nakita naman niyo may questionable calls. Nung huli nakasurvive yung UST,” he said.
The Tigers were down by as much as 15 points in the first half but managed to cut the lead to just eight before the half time mark.
Batillier and Nick Abanto paced the Red Warriors with 15 points each while Mark Olayon added another 14.
The Growling Tigers move up 1-1 in the leader board but would next face favorites De La Salle Green Archers on Wednesday at the Mall of Asia Arena.
