The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers remained undefeated in the second day of the eliminations in the men's beach volleyball tournament
The University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers remained undefeated in the second day of the eliminations in the men’s beach volleyball tournament, Sunday, Oct. 2, at the Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
In their first assignment, the España-based spikers made quick work of the De La Salle University Green Spikers, 21-13, 21-12.
“Mas mababa ‘yung bola ng La Salle kanina, madaling basahin,” said UST head coach John Paul Doloiras. “‘Yung mga hulog ng bola namin nagwo-work siya.”
UST’s Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto proved their dominance against the University of the Philippines Fighting Maroons’ veterans Alfred Balbuena and Wendell Miguel in a straight set finish.
Holding a four-point lead in the dying moments of first set, 17-13, the Tiger Spikers unleashed a 4-0 run capped by Guzman’s check ball, 21-13.
Midway in the second and deciding set, UST tightened up their defense that forced Balbuena and Miguel to commit costly attack errors, 10-3.
The Fighting Maroons tried to regain their composure as they ignited a mini run, 11-15. But the Tiger Spikers proved too much in the end game as Arbasto sealed the deal with a power tip, 21-14.
“Beterano ang mga players ng UP. Pumapalo tapos ‘yung blocks namin hindi tumatama,” Doloiras said. “Mahirap silang kalaban, buti naunahan natin sila.”
Now with a 4-0 win-loss card, the Tiger Spikers will try to sustain their victories as they go against the National University Bulldogs and Adamson University Falcons tomorrow, Oct. 3, at the same venue.
