After three consecutive bridesmaid finishes, the University of Santo Tomas Tiger Spikers finally took home the championship in the expense of the Far Eastern University Tamaraws, 21-16, in UAAP Season 79 men’s beach volleyball finals, Sunday, at Sands by the Bay in Pasay City.
After FEU’s Jude Garcia snatched the lead in the first set, 7-6, the tandem of Kris Roy Guzman and Anthony Arbasto sparked a 6-0 run to provide a breather, 12-7. After a see-saw battle, a placement shot by Arbasto finished the set, 21-16.
In the second set, Guzman provided a scoring barrage to extend their lead to five, 20-15. Garcia dropped the ball but Guzman found the line to complete their season sweep, 21-16.
“Yung mga lalaki may goal yan,” rookie head coach Paul John Doloiras said. “Kahit anong training na ipagawa ko sa kanila, hindi sila bibitaw basta makuha lang itong championship”
Guzman notched this year’s the Most Valuable Player plum while FEU’s Joshua Barrica bagged the Rookie of the Year award.
“Thank you sa lahat especially kay God,” Guzman told. “Sobrang sarap. Nangyari lang yun [championship] kasi sa mga pinagdaanan namin, sa mga sakit na nangyari sa team namin.”
Guzman also won the Rookie of the Year award in Season 76.
