Thomasian athletes shine in UniGames 2016
The University of Santo Tomas athletics and volleyball teams marked podium finishes in the 21st Philippine University Games (UniGames) in Dumaguete City last Oct. 24 to 30.
The Female Tracksters brought home 11 gold and six silver medals to defend their second straight championship in the said tournament while their male counterparts were able to reap five gold, seven silver and five bronze medals to clinch the first runner-up spot.
“We were quite surprised by the improvements made by the UP women long distance runners and this will serve as a wake-up call for us. We will have to sharpen up much earlier for the UAAP this coming February. The men’s team will be very competitive this UAAP and given a little break we will dethrone FEU,” UST Trackster head coach Emmanuel Calipes told TomasinoWeb via Facebook.
UST’s Glaiza Salcedo topped in the 100 and 200-meter dash, along with Louielyn Pamatian in the 400 and 800-meter run, and Jhanine Mansueto in the 5000-meter race.
Aira Teodiosio and Luz Delfin broke away with gold medals in discus throw and shot put respectively.
The Female Tracksters also showed no mercy en route to first place in the 4×100, 4×200, 4×400 and classical relay events.
Despite a bridesmaid finish by the Male Tracksters, Elbren Neri had a dominating performance to secure the top spot in the 800 and 1500-meter race, along with Ernest John Obiena and Lambert Padua in the 110-meter hurdles and 5000-meter walk respectively.
The Male Tracksters also able nabbed the gold in the 4×400-meter relay.
“Dito sa UniGames mas maraming malalakas na kalaban compared to UAAP. Pero ang preparation namin kasi hindi masyado okay sa training dahil sa merong nagka-injury sa amin, pero sa darating na UAAP maayos na team namin and I hope kayang-kaya naming [manalo],” said UST Men’s Team Captain Romnick Nor, who bagged silver medals in the 100 and 200-meter sprint.
Moreover, UST Golden Tigresses claimed the UniGames 2016 Women’s Volleyball tilt after sweeping the University Of Perpetual Help System DALTA in commanding fashion, 25-17, 25-11, and 25-13.
“Unigames [is] isang gauge lang ulit namin kung nasaan na kami as a collegiate team. From there, nakita na natin na medyo malayo [na ‘yung team], siguro one arm length yung layo natin sa kanila [in terms of skills]. So maganda exposure for us bonus na din na champion tayo,” said UST chief tactician Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes Jr.
The Golden Tigresses dismantled the De La Salle University Lady Spikers in their semi-finals showdown, 25-15, 25-15, 23-25, 25-10, while the Golden Spikers fell short to gain a slot in the semis as they ran out of steam against the Altas in a thrilling five-set match, 17-25, 25-22, 26-24, 23-25, 15-17.
