Growling Tigresses knock out Lady Tamaraws

The University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigresses clashed with the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws, 65-61, in the UAAP Season 79 women’s basketball tournament at the Mall of Asia Arena, Pasay City, Saturday, Oct. 1.
Both teams traded baskets in the first set which ended in favor of UST, 14-12. The Growling Tigers picked up pace in the second quarter as they banked a 14-0 run capped by Loraine Capilit’s impressive reverse lay-up in the last two minutes and Shanda Anies’ three, 35-22.
“Nung second half medyo nag-collapse ‘yung team. Buti nung first half, we had 13 points up. So ‘yun ‘yung lesson for today, hindi pwede mas less ‘yung intensity, parang we’re playing na lang not to lose eh,” said UST head coach Heidi Ong.
Precious Arellado contributed eight points to help FEU recover in the third quarter and cut the lead of UST to nine, 40-51.
The Lady Tamaraws attempted a last-ditch effort and ignited a 14-2 run through Maria Ballerser’s eight points, 54-56.
Tigress Ruby Portillo buried a trey in the last two minutes that ended FEU’s streak, followed by another three from Capilit.
Lady Tamaraw Joannah Ouano finished the game with a three-pointer, but was not enough to dismantle UST’s four point lead, 65-61.
Anies, Ann Gandalla and Capilit reigned the game for the España-based cagers with 38 points combined and 13, 7, and 2 rebounds, respectively.
Arellado dominated the game with 19 markers, followed by Balleser with 15 markers and 15 rebounds.
The UST Growling Tigresses, now holding a 2-3 win-loss record, will next face the Adamson University Lady Falcons on Wednesday, October 5, at the same venue.
