The University of Santo Tomas Male Shuttlers lost their final four bid in their do-or-die game against the Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles, 1-3, in the UAAP Season 79 Badminton Tournament, Sunday, at the Rizal Memorial Badminton Hall in Manila.
Down by two matches, Tiger duo Paul John Pantig and John Edgar Reyes tallied the lone win of their squad to prevent the shutout against Ateneo’s Clarence Filart and Sean Chan, 21-16, 21-16.
UST’s Kristian Paolo Barrios-John Mark Sotea tandem could not pull of a decider fifth game as they surrendered the match to Blue Eagles Jan Mangubat and Franz Bernardo, 12-21, 18-21.
The Espana-based shuttlers hardly penetrated the Ateneo’s prowess in the singles division as John Paul Christian Yabut and Cris Sanchez dropped their matches with straight set disadvantage.
With the loss, the Male Shuttlers are now out for final four contention for the third straight year.
“Sa men’s, sayang din kasi mas may chance talaga silang makapasok sa final four. Lumaban naman sila kaso nagkulang lang talaga sila sa angas and tapang sa court unlike other teams. Though si Paul Pantig ‘yung team [captain] ng boys, makikitaan mo talaga ng determination para manalo kaso yun nga, yung iba masyado pang mabait sa court,” UST team captain Steffi Aquino told TomasinoWeb in a text message.
In contrary, UST upset Ateneo in their last day of eliminations yesterday, 3-2, to force today’s rubber match for the fourth seed.
After dropping the first two games, the Pantig-Reyes duo started their winning ways as they needed three sets to dispatch Blue Eagles’ Mangubat and Bernardo, 17-21, 21-12, 21-17.
Sotea and Barrios kept the momentum going as they slipped past their Ateneo counterparts, 21-17, 21-19, to tie the match at 2-apiece.
Tiger skipper Pantig survived the highly-contested decider matchup against Bernardo, 18-21, 21-11, 28-26.
In women’s play, the UST Female Shuttlers settled for another fifth place finish as Ateneo Lady Eagles pounded them, 0-5.
