Queen Sofia of Spain (C) gestures as she makes her way to the University Museum during her visit at the University of Santo Tomas in Manila.
The visit of Queen Sofia of Spain to the University of Santo Tomas today has boosted up the Thomasian spirit, the Central Student Council (CSC) said.
CSC President Rubi Anne Dauan said that it has been a great honor for UST to be the only university in the country visited by Her Majesty.
“The visitation of Her Majesty the Queen of Spain would help boosting the Thomasian pride and spirit,” she said. “It’s an honor since UST lang ang binisita niyang university. It makes us prestigious and exclusive.”
Raymond Gonzales, CSC Vice President said the visitation of the Queen has put the university in a festive atmosphere.
“Everyone was in a festive mood since this is the first time the Queen visited the university again after so many years. Nakakatuwa lang,” he said.
Queen Sofia of Spain paid homage to UST in line with her five-day official visit to the Philippines as a sign of a tight relationship between Spain’s royalty and Asia’s oldest university over the years. This was her first visit to the university in almost 38 years. Her last visit was in 1974, when her husband, King Juan Carlos de Borbon y Borbon of Spain was given an honorary doctorate degree in Law.
