Simple yet whopping: Thomasians toward sustainable living!
THOMASIANS took some time off to make their promises for Mother Earth at the Tan Yan Kee (TYK) Student Center during the launch of “400 Pledges: 400 Ways to Stand Up for Nature” last July 23.
The event organized by the Student Organization Coordinating Council (SOCC), is the primer event for the council’s year-long advocacy for environmental awareness.
“Our target participants are the whole Thomasian community, we are encouraging everyone to write their pledges, even as simple as ‘not throwing my candy wrappers along the streets’ will do,” said Verlin Jan A. Molina, SOCC Auditor and the event project head.
A tree made of recycled materials placed at the center of the TYK lobby served as the highlight of the advocacy. Here, the Thomasians were given the opportunity to write their pledges.
Different environmental issues were also tackled in an environmental seminar through the collaborative efforts of SOCC and university-wide organizations such as Earth-UST, Scarlet-Accountancy and UST- House Industrial Design.
The speakers of the seminar include the country’s top environmentalists like Merci Ferrer, Rei Panaligan and the beauty queens of the Miss Earth Foundation together with UST’s very own Ms. Philippines Eco-Tourism, Angela Lauren Fernando.
“The event is just the beginning,” said Molina. “More follow-up events in partnership with different organizations and Dr. Vicky Belo are being finalized to ensure the continuity of the event.” By Peevi Jannsen N. Juan
